North Carolina’s ASG are old friends of ours having lent us songs for our early videos and performing at some of our first shows; and that was before they were cool. Their 4th release and first on the Relapse label is another dose of their southern brand of psychedelic stoner rock. Blood Drive is a great example of the band’s harmonics and heavy riffs. Listen and get the new album on their bandcamp page, and tell them to call us.
Underground rock royalty, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Carrie Brownstein of Sleater Kinney, and J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., joined Fred Armisen on Saturday Night Live to announce his departure. Fred is well known for his hilarious characters during his long tenure at SNL, but he is also an accomplished musician having played in multiple bands and having a strong connection to underground music. In a very cool move this past weekend Fred said goodbye as his character Ian Rubbish, accompanied by his favorite influential artists.
“It’s too hot, the lines are too long, it’s so dusty.” The Coachella Music and Arts Festival may be a little of those things, but we love music and art too much to care. Here are some images from Sector 9’s 3 days of escapism!
Austin, Texas is one of the birthplaces of American psychedelic rock. It started with Roky Erickson’s 13 Floor Elevators, but is now completely under the control of The Black Angels. We were lucky enough to see them in their hometown recently and their new record, ‘Indigo Meadow’, came out today!
The L.A. experimental trio VUM has gained recent attention with their dark, noir sound. Jennifer Pearl’s beautiful, haunting vocals on their new single “I Will Return", were just featured in the L.A Times! Listen here and see them with us this Saturday at the Griffin.
The very first band we walked into at this year's SXSW was the heavy, Chelsea Light Moving. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth fronts this very low-end driven, yet almost pop band on Matador records. Thank you Thurston! Listen to the single "Burroughs" here!
